The Polk County Board of Supervisors is pleased to have the opportunity to provide a Community Betterment Grant in the amount of $12,500.00 to the Cops Against Cancer organization. We hope that these funds will enable Cops Against Cancer to provide quality services to the citizens of Polk County. Community Betterment Grants are funded from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino profits. These grants provide another opportunity for the Board of Supervisors to return casino profits to our community.

Craig Phinney, Executive Director and Founder of the Cops Against Cancer organization accepted three checks totaling $12,500.00 from the Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino Executive Committee as part of their Community Betterment Program.

Since 1995, Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino have awarded more than $1.72 billion through taxes to Polk County, Polk County Betterment Grants, charitable giving grants, the City of Des Moines and Polk County Schools.

On behalf of the Cops Against Cancer Board, our clients and their families, we extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino and the Polk County Board of Supervisor for the award of these funds and for assisting in making a strong impact in our client's recovery.

These grants will be used specifically for three projects the organization has implemented.

Cops Against Cancer has made it our commitment to making a difference in cancer patients' lives. As a value-focused organization, we are built on the pillars of recovery and extending the quality of life for cancer families, providing one-on-one, family and group support transition and life purpose coaching, providing navigation and advocacy resource referrals, grief and loss support, survivorship programs and financial assistance through the purchase of equipment for our mobile fundraising BBQ Trailer.

Our goal is not only to assist but also help restore dreams, goal setting, and normalcy to the lives of patients and their families.”

Phinney, further stated, ”since 2012, Cops Against Cancer has assisted over 1,000 clients in 78 of Iowa’s 99 counties. Moreover, for the past four years, 85 cents of every dollar raised goes directly in assisting our cancer client programs.”
