For the second year in a row, it is with sincere gratitude and appreciation, Cops Against Cancer accepts this year's donation from the Des Moines Police Burial and Bargaining Associations.

During their January monthly meeting, members of the Des Moines Police Burial Association and Des Moines Police Bargaining Association presented Cops Against Cancer’s Craig Phinney, Executive Director, Shirley Phinney – Deputy Director and Board Member Nickolas Brown of the Executive Committee, a donation in the amount of $2,500.00. This is the third donation of its kind in the past two years the Des Moines Police Associations presented to Cops Against Cancer.

Throughout the year, the Police Associations have various fundraising efforts and proceeds from those events benefit three local organizations.

Last year, the DMPD donation assisted in allowing 40 local cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers to attend a financial free Cancer Retreat weekend, held in April 2016. Attendees were provided with resources on re-claiming their life after cancer, proper nutrition, physical fitness, human services tools, and financial planning provided by professionals in these areas. The goal of the weekend was for attendees to leave the conference more equipped with supportive resources and a new sense of hope, with an ultimate goal to renew, refresh and recharge their dreams and ambitions.

The Des Moines Police Associations and Cops Against Cancer organization both realize no one should have to go through an illness battle alone. Because of their donation, this style of retreat moves the client forward in a process that restores goal setting, fulfilling dreams, and taking the client from a functional lifestyle to an optimal level of living.

Learning to live as well as they can, for as long as they can require assistance. This is where CAC and the Des Moines Police Associations assist these individuals and families with the transition.
