FRIDAY, JANUARY 2017 –
Cops Against Cancer Awarded Better Business Bureau Accreditation.

The Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance (BBB WGA) helps donors make informed giving decisions and promotes high standards of conduct among organizations that solicit contributions from the public. It produces reports about national charities, evaluating them against comprehensive BBB’s Standards for Charity Accountability, and publishes a magazine, the Wise Giving Guide, three times a year. At the national and local level, BBB has established voluntary standards for charitable organizations based on information a donor may reasonably expect to evaluate on as an appeal for support.

The past few months has been busy for the Cops Against Cancer organization. Executive Director Craig Phinney stated, this has been truly a rewarding experience and we are extremely proud of our organization receiving this recognition.”

BBB Charity Reports offer an unbiased overview so that consumers can feel confident when giving. Often, third-party recommendations such as bloggers or other websites, may not have fully researched an organization. BBB WGA does not rank charities but rather seeks to assist donors in making informed judgments about those that solicit their support. These features make giving decisions easier by offering clear insight into various aspects of the organization.

Give.org has reports on about 1,300 nationally soliciting charities. In addition, about half of the 112 BBBs in the United States and Canada cumulatively produce reports on over 10,000 locally soliciting charities using the same BBB Charity Standards as BBB WGA. Evaluations are done without charge to the charity and are posted for free public access on Give.org.

The Better Business Bureau of Des Moines, Inc. evaluates local charities for compliance with the BBB Wise Giving Alliance (“BBB WGA”) charity accountability standards (“the Standards”). The BBB WGA is the national charity watchdog affiliated with the BBB system. The Better Business Bureau of Des Moines, Inc. is authorized to license the local charity seal, designed to assist donors in making informed giving decisions, to local charities that meet those standards.

The Standards for Charity Accountability were developed with professional and technical assistance from representatives of small and large charitable organizations, the accounting profession, grant making foundations, corporate contributions officers, regulatory agencies, research organizations and the Better Business Bureau system. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance also commissioned significant independent research on donor expectations to ensure that the views of the general public were reflected in the standards.

Organizations that comply with these accountability standards have provided documentation that they meet all 20 standard requirement, which includes:

In how they govern their organization,
In the ways, they spend their money,
In the truthfulness of their representations, and
In their willingness to disclose basic information to the public.

These standards apply to publicly soliciting organizations that are tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and to other organizations conducting charitable solicitations.
